Climbing Routes and Boulder Problems
Route Setting
All of the routes and boulder problems at Alter Rock are set by professionals. Some of the countries best such as Steve McClure and Mark “Zippy” Pretty have been putting up the routes since Alter Rock opened its doors in 2008. The ongoing programme also includes boulder setting by Tom Randall, Rob Napier, Mark Pretty, Steve McLure and others. Check out the chalkboard when you visit to see who has set new routes.;
Roped Climbing
Alter Rock has 54 roped climbing lines, around half of these lines have a top rope on them at any one time. The remaining lines are reserved for lead climbing and most have insitu-runners in place. There are around six lines at any one time without runners in place allowing climbers to climb the routes placing their own quick draws.
At Alter Rock we try to accommodate as many different people as possible and have climbing from french grades 2 – 8a. The grades and number of routes do vary slightly with each round of setting.
The approximate spread of roped climbing grades is shown below:

Bouldering Problems
Alter Rock has 100sq metres of bouldering with around 40 problems on the wall at any one time.
Grades on the bouldering wall range from font 3-7a+ and above (VB – V7 upwards, white – black tags)
Problems are reset every few weeks on a rotating basis meaning that there are fresh problems to try all the time but the ones you've been working wont disappear overnight.
There is also a traverse wall with routes from font grade 4 – 7a, adding an extra dimension to the climbing experience.
The approximate spread of bouldering problems is shown below.
